Our Collections and Displays team have just returned from another of their regular trips through Ipswich’s past in the Society’s very own time machine.

This trip, the team stopped off in the 1920s where they met with a gentleman called Mr Herbert L. Saxty.  Mr Saxty told our team he works at the Ipswich woollen mills.  Our team mentioned to Mr Saxty that they were on another mission of exploration and discovery to find out about things of old from Ipswich.

Mr Saxty then produced this item (photo), hoping that our team could tell him about it.  All he could tell them was that it was made in the very early years of the 20th century.

Can you help the team by finding out what you can about it and let us know here in this space.

Mr Saxty is expecting the team to return shortly to the 1920s and tell him what everybody thinks.

(Hint : Talk to older people and ask them what they think)

Some questions to guide you
What is it?
What was it used for?
How was it used?
Who may have used it?
Why is it not in use today?
Does it have similar parts to something in use today?
