Coal Miners

Although no underground mines remain operative in Ipswich, the city's connection with the coal industry remains strong. This is reflected in the membership and collections of the Ipswich Historical Society.

The following images show some local coal miners of the past at work “down below” and at social events.

The camaraderie amongst miners is evident in what was a dangerous occupation where workers depended on one another for their safety.
