Conservation & restoration work has begun again on Cooneana Homestead at the Cooneana Heritage Centre.
The structure is in its 150th year, construction having begun in 1868 by Samuel Pearson Welsby who selected the large portion of land on which it stands.
The house is of a very rare, if not unique design, being built entirely of thick vertical slabs of hardwood, a technique most identified with pioneer huts rather than a large above-ground residence.
The Cooneana Heritage Centre has been home to the Ipswich Historical Society since 2002 and the conservation & restoration of the homestead has been an ongoing project of the Society.
Initial work involved stabilising the structure to halt any further deterioration. The house was re stumped and the flooring replaced. The corrugated iron roof was also replaced.
