The above image captures the moment in the 1870s when a boy, who is about to cross Brisbane Street, looks directly into the camera lens of an unidentified photographer.
In the background, Brisbane Street climbs up to the ridge called Limestone Hill.
It was here that the foundations of Ipswich were laid when a lime kiln worked by convicts was built in the late 1820s.
When the convict era ended and free settlement was allowed in 1842, the resident convict overseer George Thorn opened a general store and later an inn called the Queens Arms Hotel. He would come to be known as the "Father of Ipswich".
And the rest, as they say, is history.
